Before setting off on your travels, there are a few things that will be helpful to know. Unlike in the UK, cars in New Zealand drive on the left-hand side of the road, and the steering wheel is on the right. The speed limit in urban areas is 50 km/h, while on rural roads it's typically 100 km/h.
Getting around the sprawling city and its picturesque environs is best done by car. Given the city’s manageable size, you may find compact or economy cars the most suitable and fuel-efficient for your Invercargill adventure. Also, almost all rented cars in New Zealand are automatic, so you can focus more on the stunning routes than gear shifts.
From museums to parks, Invercargill has something for everyone. Some top spots include the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, and Queens Park, and Oreti Beach. With your rental car, you can also easily venture outside the city to discover natural wonders such as Bluff, known for its seafood, and the world-famous Milford Sound.
Invercargill is a reasonably car-friendly city with ample parking. Most hotels offer free on-site parking. Public parking facilities are generally reasonably priced, but always check parking restrictions before leaving your car.
Unlike the UK, the seasons in New Zealand are reversed, so your summer vacation will be in their winter months. However, Invercargill's climate is temperate with mild winters and cool summers. Shoulder seasons (autumn and spring) are generally the ideal time to visit, when the weather is pleasant and the city less crowded.
The currency in Invercargill is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). While credit cards are widely accepted, it's always a good idea to keep a bit of cash on hand, especially in smaller establishments or for parking fees. Living costs are similar to the UK.
Lastly, we can't forget the characteristic Southern hospitality. Friendly and welcoming, locals will be more than happy to help with directions or recommend their favourite spots in town. The laid-back atmosphere makes Invercargill the perfect destination for a stress-free getaway.
So kick your holiday planning into high gear -- Invercargill awaits!
