Unlike in the UK, traffic in Holland moves on the right-hand side of the road. Roundabouts can be particularly tricky as traffic flows anticlockwise. However, not to worry, Dutch roads are generally well-maintained, and signage is clear and easy to understand.
Holland is quite a compact country with bustling cities and tranquil countryside landscapes. A small to medium-sized car such as a Volkswagen Golf or a Ford Focus is perfect for navigating through Holland's narrow city streets and picturesque countryside routes.
Most Dutch cities have park and ride facilities. In Amsterdam and other major cities, street parking is rather expensive, and availability is limited. Hence, using car parks or parking garages is a more convenient and cost-effective option.
City | Parking Tariff (per hour) |
---|---|
Amsterdam | €4.00 - €7.50 |
Rotterdam | €3.20 - €4.00 |
The Hague | €2.80 - €4.00 |
Holland offers a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. From the historic canals of Amsterdam to Kinderdijk's UNESCO-protected windmills, there's a lot to explore. Don't miss out on the Hague's Mauritshuis museum, home to Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring.
In Holland, seat belts are mandatory for all passengers. Also, using mobile phones while driving is illegal unless you utilise a hands-free device. Be mindful that, unlike in the UK, the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit is lower in Holland, with a maximum of 0.05% permitted.
The Dutch climate is temperate maritime, characterised by mild summers and cool winters. The best time to visit Holland is from April to October. April is particularly beautiful when the tulip fields are in full bloom, while the warmer summer months are ideal for outdoor activities.
The official currency of Holland is the Euro (€). Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are readily available. It's beneficial to have some cash on hand for small expenses like parking meters or tips.
