Important information about Heraklion International Airport

The airport Heraklion HER, also called Airport Iraklio "Nikos Kazantzakis", is the main airport of the Greek island Crete. In terms of passenger volume, it is the second largest airport in Greece after Athen Airport. It is named after the writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis, who was born in Heraklion in 1883. The airport is located about three kilometers east of the city center of Heraklion in the municipality of Nea Alikarnassos, not far from the port.

The transport connection of Heraklion Airport

The bus stop is a few minutes walk from the airport terminal building. It is the cheapest transport to and from the airport if you want to pick up your hired car in the city center first. Shuttle buses run from the airport every few minutes from early morning until late in the evening from Monday to Saturday, with reduced runs on Sunday. There are two bus stations in the city of Heraklion, bus station A and B. These offer connections throughout the island of Crete.

Taxis offer a fast and flexible way to and from Heraklion Airport. Arriving passengers can take a cab at the cab rank located at the arrivals level of the terminal. Cabs are available 24 hours a day, all year round. The official taxis are gray and have a sign on the roof with the word "TAXI". The cab rides in Heraklion are cheap. Prices double between midnight and 6am.

There is an information desk in the arrivals hall near the baggage area. There are two duty-free stores located in the departure area for Schengen and non-Schengen countries. There is also a kiosk selling a variety of products including spirits, chocolate, newspapers and cigarettes.
