Harju County, the northernmost region in Estonia, hosts the country's vibrant capital, Tallinn. With a population of over half a million and a rich history dating back to medieval times, this region mirrors the aesthetics of Scandinavia, fused with a dash of Soviet influence, promising a unique cultural experience.
From the cobblestone streets of Tallinn Old Town, UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the sandy white beaches on the coastline, Harju County is a treat for any traveller. Do not skip the beautiful Lahemaa National Park, where forests, wetlands and rocky coastlines create a breathtaking spectacle.
Opting for a compact car or a sedan is ideal for driving in Harju County. Both offer a balance of comfort and agility needed for the roads here, especially in the smaller town streets.
One of the best ways to experience Harju County is by taking a scenic drive along the coast. Start in Tallinn, voyage toward Harku, and continue on to Kloogaranna, enjoying stunning beach views. Venues worth visiting on this route include Keila-Joa Manor and waterfall, and the picturesque village of Rannamõisa.
In general, driving in Estonia is relaxed. The speed limit in urban areas is 50 km/h, which may be different from what you're used to back in the UK. In rural areas, it ranges from 70 to 90 km/h, while on expressways the limit is up to 110 km/h. Do remember, driving is on the right-hand side, unlike in the UK. And most importantly, don't forget your driver's license!
Estonia experiences a temperate seasonal climate, meaning summers are relatively warm (with temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius), while winters can be harsh and cold (going down to -20 degrees Celsius). Take care to check the forecast before your journey and adapt your driving accordingly.
It may be a surprise for you to know that Estonia uses the Euro. So, you might want to have some change handy for any small purchases on the road.
Depending on your travel dates, you might be able to catch one of Harju County's famous events, such as the Tallinn Old Town Days festival in summer or the spectacular Christmas market in winter. So, whenever you decide to visit, there's always something special to look forward to!
