Haifa is Israel's third-largest city, it combines rich history, stunning landscapes and a vibrant mix of cultures. Nestled in between the majestic Mount Carmel and the azure Mediterranean Sea, Haifa is a charming cosmopolitan city that will leave you with lasting memories.
Driving in Haifa is a unique experience but remember to be mindful of the local traffic rules. Valid international driving permits are required for driving in Israel. Unlike the UK, driving in Israel is on the right-hand side, and the steering wheel is on the left, which may take some getting used to. Seatbelts are compulsory, drinking and driving is strongly prohibited, and drivers should be aware of the mobile phone usage restrictions.
Compact cars are ideal for city driving due to their ability to easily navigate the small streets and easily find parking. If you plan to venture into the stunning mountainous regions nearby, an SUV might serve you better, providing comfort and power.
Parking in Haifa can be tricky, especially in the Carmel centre area. Try to avoid driving between 7am and 9am and 4pm to 6pm as these are the peak traffic hours. On Saturdays however, parking is free and there is less traffic on the roads.
Baha'i Gardens are a must-see, as well as the Carmel National Park, which offers stunning views. Don't forget to visit the Elijah's Cave - a sacred site for different religions. Haifa also hosts a plethora of impressive museums, from the Israel National Museum of Science, Technology and Space to the culture-rich Hecht Museum.
Consider traveling to nearby cities such as Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for a change of scenery. Enjoy the vibrant nightlife in Tel Aviv, or the spiritual aura of Jerusalem may just enhance your trip.
Haifa is known for its mild Mediterranean climate, which makes it a year-round destination. However, the city truly comes alive during the winter holiday season with the Festival of Festivals celebrating Jewish, Muslim, and Christian holidays.
The local currency is the Israeli new shekel (NIS). Credit cards are accepted at most stores and restaurants.
We hope this guide will prepare you well for your journey and make your driving experience in Haifa enjoyable. Safe travels!
