Graubünden is a mountainous region in eastern Switzerland. Known for its stunning Alpine scenery, it offers an array of outdoor activities, from winter sports to hiking and biking in the warmer months. It includes famous resorts like St. Moritz and Davos and is also home to three of Switzerland's major river valleys.
Ensure your rental car has all the required equipment. In Switzerland, it's a legal requirement to carry a reflective jacket, warning triangle and first aid kit. Also, remember that in Switzerland, unlike the UK, you drive on the right-hand side of the road – this can be a bit tricky at first!
The general speed limits in urban areas are 50 km/h, outside built-up areas 80 km/h, on expressways 100 km/h and on motorways 120 km/h. Bear in mind that Swiss traffic fines can be quite steep!
Embark on a scenic drive along the Alpine passes, meandering through picturesque valleys and quaint traditional villages. Don't miss the world-famous Bernina Express train journey, from St. Moritz to Tirano in Italy, offering breathtaking views of Graubünden's mountains and valleys.
Though Graubünden is best known for its mountains, it also offers beautiful beaches around its crystal-clear alpine lakes. Check out Lake Cauma or Lake Cresta for a refreshing swim in the summer months.
The local currency here is the Swiss franc. A fun local custom to know: in some parts of Graubünden (like the Engadine), people greet each other with 'Allegra' instead of 'Hello'.
Experience Graubünden's distinctive culture through its traditional music, language and cuisine. Don't miss the annual 'Fête de l’Escalade' in December, a colourful celebration marking the defence of Geneva against a surprise attack.
We hope this guide helps you plan your Graubünden adventure. Safe travels!
