One thing's for sure, driving in Grand Case bears some distinct differences to the UK. First, contrary to the UK, driving is on the right hand side of the road here, so bear this in mind especially at junctions. Speed limits can vary but generally, it's 50km/h in built-up areas and 80km/h on open roads. As for seat belts, they're obligatory for all passengers, just like back home. Another major difference — there's no MOT equivalent here.
Given the type of roads you will encounter, small to medium-sized cars are your best bet in Grand Case. Compact cars, particularly, are excellent for navigating narrow lanes in the town. As a tip, choose a vehicle with a powerful air conditioning system as the tropical climate can get quite warm.
Finding a parking spot during peak hours can be challenging. However, several parking spaces are available along the Boulevard de Grand Case. Just remember to not park in places with a yellow curb as it indicates no parking areas.
Besides its famous beach, Grand Case offers numerous attractions. The town's main street or "restaurant row" is a must-visit, as are the Creole Rock for snorkelling and the Tintamarre Island for pure serenity. For the history buffs, the Wallblake House, dating back to the 18th century, makes for an interesting visit.
The town is divided into two main areas - the Boulevard de Grand Case and the more residential Ruelle de la Poste. Both offer unique experiences of the local life and culture.
The Grand Case Beach Club, located in the north of Grand Case, is a fantastic spot for relaxation. Other scenic beaches include Plage de Petites Cayes and Plage d'Anse Marcel.
Though France's Saint Martin uses the Euro (€), US dollars are widely accepted due to the proximity of Dutch St. Maarten, where the dollar is the official currency.
Although it's warm all year round, the best time to visit is November to May, during the dry season. The rainy season, peaking in August and September, witnesses tropical storms.
To explore Grand Case and surroundings with full flexibility, a hired car is the best option. This gives you the opportunity to explore secluded beaches, local shops and boutiques, and to dive into the vibrant nightlife of the island at your own pace!
