Genoa, known for its rich maritime history, stunning architecture and delectable cuisine, is a fascinating city by the sea in the Ligurian region of Italy. Its lively mix of the old and the new captures the hearts of travellers who venture into this side of the country. With its hilly landscapes and narrow streets, Genoa is often considered the city that is best explored with a car.
Driving in Italy can be a unique experience compared to the UK. In Italy, including Genoa, you drive on the right-hand side of the road. The traffic signs are quite similar but exude a more European look. Speed limits vary; in urban areas, it's 50 km/h (31 mph), outside built-up areas it's 90 km/h (56 mph) and on autostradas (motorways) it's 130 km/h (80 mph).
Seat belts are mandatory and it's illegal to use mobile phones while driving unless you have a hands-free device. Drinking and driving laws are also strict - the legal limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, simply put - it's best to avoid alcohol when driving.
Genoa's streets can be narrow and hilly, so a small, compact car is usually the best choice. It's easier to park, and can navigate the winding streets of the old city pretty comfortably. Both manual and automatic cars are available, but remember, automatic rentals might be a bit pricier.
Parking in Genoa city centre can be challenging. Blue-lined parking spots are paid parking areas - you can pay at the machines scattered around. It's free from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., on Sundays and public holidays. While parking, remember not to park in spots marked with white lines as they are for residents only.
With your rental car, you can easily explore the beautiful Liguria region along the Italian Riviera. Drive southeast to visit beautiful Portofino or head west to San Remo and the French border. The hillside region of Piedmont, well-known for its wine, is also within a comfortable day-trip distance.
Italy uses the Euro (€), unlike the Pound Sterling (£) in the UK. Credit cards are widely accepted but carrying some cash is recommended for local shops and cafes.
So buckle up, adventurers! Genoa awaits your discovery!
