On the right side, please! Remember that, unlike in the UK, Germans drive on the right-hand side of the road. This might take a minute to get used to, but stick with it - you'll be fine after a while.
A compact car is ideal for exploring Göttingen city centre as it's easy to park, but if you're planning to experience the scenic routes surrounding the city, you might want to consider something larger, perhaps an SUV.
Residential areas have a typical speed limit of 30 km/h whilst other urban areas are usually 50 km/h. On some parts of the German Autobahn, there's no official speed limit, which can be very different from driving in the UK, but do stay cautious and drive safely.
Here are some must-visit attractions when driving around in your rental car.
Start your journey at the Old Botanical Garden. It's located right in the city centre, and parking is readily available nearby.
Next, head to the prestigious University of Göttingen, one of the oldest and most respected universities in Germany. The university and the surrounding historic buildings make for excellent photo opportunities.
For a magical journey, drive along The Fairy Tale Road. It's a scenic route starting from Hanau to Bremen, passing through Göttingen, hence a perfect excuse to explore the rich, cultural heritage and beautiful landscapes of Lower Saxony.
Göttingen has plenty of free and paid parking lots available. To avoid any parking fines, make sure to read the parking signs carefully as parking restrictions may apply.
Germany uses the Euro (€), not the Pound (£). You'll need Euros for paying in most places, although major credit and debit cards are accepted.
Whilst Britain gets its fair share of rain, Göttingen enjoys a temperate seasonal climate. So be sure to check the weather before your trip and pack accordingly!
As you can see, there's a whole lot of exploring to be done in Göttingen. Happy driving!
