Hello, fellow traveller! Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR) is your landing spot in Fortaleza. The airport is well-connected to surrounding cities and holiday havens, making it the beginning of many adventurous journeys.
There are four major car rental companies located at the airport: Localiza, Movida, Unidas and Foco. You'll find their counters in the arrivals hall - no long treks with luggage in tow!
Should you need to top up fuel levels before completion of your journey, don't fret! There are at least three petrol stations within a 5km radius of the airport, with convenient 24-hour services.
Coming from the land where people drive on the left, you might startle at the thought; but don't worry, adjusting to the right-hand side of the road isn't so tricky. Besides, doing what the locals do can be part of the fun!
Brazil's highways have a speed limit of 120 km/h (a little over 70 mph, yours truly), while the city areas generally restrict to 60 km/h (roughly 37 mph). Don't worry! All signages are bilingual, in Portuguese and English. So, unless your British heart truly yearns for some km/h to mph math in real-time, you're good to go.
Beyond Fortaleza's cheery city boundaries, Brazil's coastlines are calling! Ceará's highways are famed for their picturesque panoramic views. Having a rental car gives you the freedom to stop, click and marvel at your own pace.
Taking the CE-085 from the airport, you'll drive past lagoons and beaches enroute to Jericoacoara, a beach town daubed as one of the most beautiful in the world. Another favourite, Canoa Quebrada, is southeast of Fortaleza and can be reached via the CE-040.
The fun begins once you touch down at Pinto Martins International Airport. Just remember, it's Real (and pronounced ‘hey-ow’) here, not Pound Sterling!
Fortaleza and its surrounding areas are typically warm, with the climate much like a tropical monsoon. No need for winter woollies here!
Many signs and public instructions within Ceará are provided both in Portuguese and English - making things conveniently accessible. Diversity is embraced and cherished here.
Ready for the drive? We hope you enjoy your journey with your rental wheels. Happy travels!
