Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport is your gateway to the northern region of Thailand. Expect a rather quiet airport compared to the bustling Bangkok airports, yet it has all the facilities you need: eateries, shops, even car rental services to help you start your journey without a hitch.
Driving on the left side of the road won't be a foreign concept for you, as it's the same in the UK. However, do remember that international driving permits are required in Thailand alongside your UK driving licence. Regular traffic lights may flash yellow at night, indicating you're free to proceed with caution, unlike in the UK where flashing yellow signals are typically found at pelican crossings.
Upon exiting customs, you will see several car rental counters. Companies include internationally recognised brands such as Avis, Budget and Hertz. Compact cars or economy cars are the best choice for navigating the rural and city areas, but an SUV or pickup truck would be ideal if you plan to venture into mountainous areas.
Before driving off, ensure your tank is full. The nearest petrol station, PTT Station, is only 4 minutes away from the airport. Remember that in Thailand, you don’t pump petrol yourself – a petrol station attendant does it for you. Most petrol stations in Thailand are open 24 hours.
Given Chiang Rai's geography, the fastest route to the city centre from the airport is via Phaholyothin Road. It’s a 20-minute drive with light traffic, perfect to get a feel for Thai roads immediately.
The Thai Baht (THB) is the national currency, and though cards are accepted in many locations, cash is preferred. As of 2021, the average cost of petrol in Thailand is approximately THB 30 per litre. Tolls are not common in Chiang Rai, but parking fees in the city center and tourist attractions vary from THB 20-50 per day.
Chiang Rai has a tropical savannah climate. December to February is considered the cool season, whereas March to May is hot, and June to November is the rainy season. Light, breathable clothing is recommended. An umbrella or raincoat might come in handy during the rainy season.
Chiang Rai City, the provincial capital, is a growing tourist destination. Its White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and Blue Temple (Wat Rong Sear Tean) cannot be missed. Doi Mae Salong, a scenic mountainous town, is a 1.5-hour drive from Chiang Rai city. Visit Choui Fong Tea Plantation, or take a trip down the Mekong River, both accessible by car.
