Ferragudo is a compact village, so you can easily see the sights on foot. That being said, a rental car will prove beneficial when exploring the broader Algarve region. The village is famed for its charming white houses tumbling down the hillside towards the riverfront, a pristine turret guarding the entrance to the harbour, and mouthwatering seafood cuisine.
Portugal's traffic laws may differ slightly from the UK's. Notably, vehicles travel on the right side of the road, not the left. The speed limit in urban areas is generally 50km/h, while on motorways, it's typically up to 120km/h. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and it's illegal to use a mobile phone while driving unless you have a hands-free system.
Compact and economy class cars are ideal for navigating the narrow cobblestone streets of Ferragudo. However, if you're planning to venture out into the region’s rugged landscapes, an SUV can handle the terrain better.
Ferragudo's beaches are second to none. Praia Grande, located near the fortress, is beautiful and spacious. But don't miss Praia do Pintadinho and Praia dos Caneiros, both offering breathtaking views of the region's characteristic cliffs.
For seafood lovers, Ferragudo is a paradise with fresh catches served daily. Try a "cataplana" - a traditional seafood stew, or "sardinhas assadas" - grilled sardines, a staple in Portuguese cuisine.
For those arriving by plane, Faro Airport is just over an hour's drive from Ferragudo. Hiring a car directly from the airport makes it easy to start your holiday right away. For shorter trips or a change of pace, local taxis are affordable and reliable.
Like much of Portugal, Ferragudo enjoys celebrating with traditional festivals. Some highlights include the Seafood Festival in August and the Christmas Fair in December - both perfect opportunities to immerse oneself in local culture.
A midnight boat tour to watch the sunset from the sea is a truly unforgettable experience. Comfortable shoes are recommended due to the cobbled streets around Ferragudo. Don't forgot suncream – Portugal's sun is stronger than back home!
Embrace the enchantment of Ferragudo and make the most of your journey by having the freedom to navigate at your own pace with a rental car. Ready to explore? Drive safe and sweet travels!
