Located less than 10 miles from the city centre, Erzurum Airport (ERZ) is the perfect starting point for your travels. The airport's modern facilities and efficient service provide a smooth transition from air to road.
Prepare for a unique driving experience as some practices could vary from those in the UK.
The first thing to note is that, unlike the UK, motorists drive on the right-hand side of the road in Turkey. While it may take a day or so to get accustomed to, the adjustment is generally quick.
As in the UK, seat belts are mandatory for all passengers in Turkey. Unlike the UK, the use of mobile phones without a hands-free system while driving is strictly prohibited, even at traffic lights.
Several reputable car hire companies, both local and international, operate at Erzurum Airport. Look out for Avis, Europcar and Hertz among others.
Given the mountainous terrain around Erzurum, an SUV or any car with good ground clearance is advisable. Make sure it's equipped with snow chains if you're visiting in winter, as the region is known for its heavy snowfall.
There is a variety of petrol stations only a few kilometres from the airport. For a quick refuel, we recommend Opet and Total, located on the Ahmet Erhan Gursoy Caddesi road not far from the airport.
With a hire car, the region's remarkable attractions are within easy reach. The historical city of Tortum, with its famous waterfall, lies about 100 km northeast of Erzurum. Then there's the magnificent Lake Cildir, Turkey's fourth largest lake, about a 2-hour drive from the city.
Erzurum has a harsh continental climate with hot summers and extremely cold winters. Always check the weather before setting off, and remember that satellite navigation is your best bet for tackling the region's winding roads!
The Turkish Lira (TRY) is the currency of Turkey. Credit cards are widely accepted in Erzurum, but having some cash handy is a good idea, just in case!
