Ercan International Airport, located about 13 km east of Nicosia, is the primary airport in Northern Cyprus - an area steeped in history and natural beauty. With an average of approximately 4 million passengers per year, the airport is compact, efficiency driven and tourist-friendly. It provides a great starting point for exploring the island's attractions, such as the ancient town of Famagusta, the harbour town of Kyrenia, and the divided capital, Nicosia.
Unlike the UK where Pound Sterling (£) is the currency, at Ercan airport, Turkish Lira (₺) is predominantly used. Please note that other currencies such as Pound Sterling, Euro, and US Dollar are commonly accepted in most places around Northern Cyprus.
Renting a car at Ercan airport is both practical and advisable. With several international and local car hire firms operating from within the airport – finding the perfect car to suit your needs couldn't be simpler.
Most UK drivers prefer automatic cars, and it’s no different in Cyprus. From small city cars – perfect for couples, to people carriers and SUVs well-suited for families, there's a vehicle for every need. Most people opt for intermediate or full-size cars for their extra room and automatic transmission.
Cyprus is a left-hand traffic (LHT) territory just like the UK, which makes driving quite familiar for the Brits. Do remember, however, that the signages are primarily in Turkish.
The journey to Nicosia takes about 30 minutes via the A1. For a scenic route, drive alongside the rugged northern coastline towards the beautiful town of Kyrenia. It’s a delightful hour-long drive from the airport via the E965 and E301.
With a rented car from Ercan airport, you can easily access Northern Cyprus’ gem cities and picturesque villages. It’s the most convenient way to get around the island at your leisure, exploring as you please.
Before you drive away, ensure you have a proper understanding of local traffic laws, are aware of parking rules in various towns and villages and have mapped out petrol stations on your route. Cyprus is waiting for you to explore!
