The El Loa Airport, located in Calama, is the main gateway to the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on earth. This gives you the exciting opportunity to experience a completely different environment compared to what you're used to in Britain.
Having your own vehicle grants you the freedom to comfortably explore surrounding cities and destinations. There are several car rental companies operating at the airport. We recommend you book in advance for the best deals and to ensure availability, especially during high season.
When it comes to driving, there are a few differences you should be aware of:
The official currency is the Chilean Peso (CLP). Credit cards are accepted at most places in the cities. However, having some cash could be beneficial when you're at smaller districts or rural areas. So, a quick stop at one of the ATMs inside the airport might be a good idea.
The Atacama desert has almost no rainfall, so pack your luggage accordingly. The temperature in summer (December - February) averages at about 30°C, and over winter (June - August) it can get down to about 0°C at night.
While out driving, keep an eye on your petrol gauge. Look for "Bencineras" (gas stations), which are often around major cities. It's recommended to keep the tank at least half full when venturing into more remote areas. Route 5 "Panamericana Norte" is the principal highway leading to Antofagasta city, the region's capital, about 200 km from Calama. The wonderful views on this route are worth experiencing.
Apart from Calama, San Pedro de Atacama, and Antofagasta are within driving distance. San Pedro de Atacama is a popular hub for adventure tourism - think volcanic hot springs, desert stargazing, and flamingo spotting. Antofagasta offers sea views, beaches, and historic architecture.
Your upcoming Chilean adventure is sure to be memorable. Drive safe, and enjoy your journey.
