The Eastern Cape offers beautiful driving routes taking you through a spectacular mix of forests, mountains, rivers and coastlines. Car hire is readily available, and we would recommend a mid-size or larger vehicle for utmost comfort and safety, especially if you plan to venture off the beaten track.
As a UK resident, you'll find driving rules quite understandable. Speed limits are similar to UK’s with urban areas typically having a limit of 60 km/h, single-carriageway roads 100 km/h, and motorways 120 km/h. Be aware though, metric system is used here, so all distance and speed indicators are in kilometers.
You cannot miss out on tasting traditional Xhosa dishes like Umngqusho, a delectable dish made from white maize and beans. The Eastern Cape is also famous for its seafood, so be sure to try some fresh-from-the-ocean bream or calamari.
Eastern Cape is blessed with a moderate climate. Summers (December to March) can get hot, with temperatures reaching up to 26°C, so light clothing is recommended. While in winter (June to August), temperatures drop to around 7°C, so pack a warm jacket and umbrella.
The South African Rand (ZAR) is used in the Eastern Cape. The coins include denominations of 10, 20 and 50 cents, R1, R2 and R5. The notes issued are R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. Remember to have both types for smaller purchases and tipping.
Eastern Cape is a perfect blend of adventure, culture and relaxation. It provides a contrasting, yet delightful experience far away from the bustling streets of London. Enjoy your trip!
