Located in the heart of the Piedmont region in north-west Italy, Cuneo is a city brimming with history, stunning architecture, and a thriving food and wine scene. Nestled amidst the alps and monferrato hills, it appeals to those who enjoy the blend of exquisite gastronomy, outdoor activities and cultural sightseeing.
Navigating Cuneo's compact city centre with its largely pedestrianised streets is a breeze. However, to explore beyond the city, a car is indispensable. Here's what you should consider:
Choose a small, economic car that's easy to manoeuvre for city trips. If you're planning weekend trips into the Alps, an SUV would be more suitable.
There are numerous parking lots in Cuneo, many with free parking for the first two hours. Please look carefully for "Parcheggio" signs.
Speed limits are strictly enforced in Italy. 50km/h in urban areas, 90km/h on secondary roads, 110km/h on highways and 130km/h on autostradas (motorways).
Remember to drive on the right side of the road, unlike in the UK. Seat belts are mandatory for everyone in the car. Also, refrain from using your mobile phone while at the wheel, unless you have a hands-free device.
Wander around the beautiful Piazza Galimberti, visit the early 20th century built Cathedral of Santa Maria del Bosco, or explore the many historic palaces including the stunning Villa Oldofredi Tadini.
Nestled between the Alps, skiing in winter and hiking in summer are among the top activities. The nearby Riserva Naturale del Crava Morozzo offers bird-watching and beautiful landscapes.
With your rental car, why not visit the surrounding cities of Turin primed with majestic architecture, Alba for its renowned wines and truffles, and the coastal resort town of Savona.
Cuneo boasts a temperate climate, with warm summers and chilly winters. The biggest event in Cuneo is the 'Giostra dei Mondi', a spectacular traditional tournament held in late August/early September. Make sure not to miss it!
Italy uses the Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's wise to carry some cash for smaller establishments.
Cuneo International Airport (CUF) is located about 20km from the city centre. Car rental services are available at the airport.
Enjoy your journey around Cuneo and its captivating surroundings!
