Located in the heart of Chile's Aysén Region, Coyhaique is a natural paradise and the gateway to Patagonia. A world away from the hustle and bustle of city life, here you'll find unspoilt landscapes, refreshing rivers, tranquil lakes, and majestic mountains. Watch out for wildlife, including foxes and huemul, a south Andean deer.
While the city centre is easily walkable, you would require a car to explore Coyhaique's natural charm fully. Compact cars are suitable for city drives, while you might want to opt for 4x4s for adventuring into the mountainous terrains. Remember to have a look at both petrol and diesel options while renting, as diesel is often a more affordable choice in Chile.
Parking in Coyhaique is generally hassle-free. Just ensure you avoid 'Exclusivo' parking spaces, reserved for permit holders. Other than that, feel free to park and start exploring!
Similarly, to the UK, U-turns are allowed unless indicated otherwise, and priority is given to the right, unless signed. However, contrary to the UK, in Chile we drive on the right-hand side of the road.
Nearest to Coyhaique is Balmaceda Airport, a 90-minute drive from the city centre. No train stations in Coyhaique, but the area is served well by buses and taxis.
The city experiences a tundra climate, unusual for its latitude. Be prepared for cold winters with temperatures dropping to -4°C, and relatively warmer summers at 15-20°C. June to August sees the maximum snowfall, a stark contrast to the mild and rainy British winters.
The Chilean Peso is the local currency, with ATMs easily accessible in the city. Credit cards are widely accepted, so keep your pounds safe for future travels!
We hope you found this guide helpful. But remember, no guide can capture the real beauty and thrill of exploring Coyhaique. Happy travelling!
