Widely known for its vast deserts in the north, world-class vineyards, awe-inspiring skies, and pristine beaches, the Coquimbo Region is a hidden gem in northern Chile. The striking contrast between the cold Pacific Ocean and the heat of the Atacama Desert creates a unique maritime fog oasis, locally known as "camanchaca", providing a surreal driving experience that you won't find back home.
Driving in Chile might differ slightly from what you're used to in the UK. First and foremost, remember that Chileans drive on the right-hand side of the road!
Urban areas: 50 km/h
Rural roads: 90 km/h
Motorways: 120 km/h
Given the mixed terrain of the Coquimbo Region, a compact SUV is a solid choice for a smooth ride with ample luggage space. However, if you are planning to stick to city driving, a small car would be more economical and comfortable.
There's no shortage of places to explore so let's mention a few to pop on your windshield:
Coquimbo's climate is desert but with a maritime influence, so it's milder than typical deserts. Expect warm, dry summers (December to February), and milder, wetter winters (June to August). Dress with layers since it can get cool once the sun sets.
The local currency is Chilean Peso (CLP). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's advisable to carry some cash for small vendors. Also, remember to keep some coins handy for tolls if your route includes motorways.
Get ready for an absolutely amazing journey soaking up the richness of northern Chile! Remember, the Coquimbo Region holds something for everyone, and with your favourite companion (your rental car), you’ll have the freedom to explore it all at your own pace.
