Car Hire and Roads

The roads in Cochabamba, and more broadly in Bolivia, can differ significantly from what you're used to in the UK, with more unpredictable elements to consider. Renting a 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially for trips outside of the city. The 4x4 is a safe choice for both rough terrains and city streets.

Parking

Street parking is available but it's more advisable to use the local parking garages known as 'parqueos'.

Attractions

Use your rental car to visit fantastic places like Cristo de la Concordia, one of the largest statues of Jesus in the world, or the architecturally stunning Cochabamba Cathedral. Just an hour’s drive will take you to the beautiful Toro Toro National Park, perfect for hiking and spotting dinosaur footprints.

Driving Routes

One essential drive is along the route to Quillacollo, a neighbouring city famous for the Virgen of Urkupiña festival. Equally beautiful is the drive to Villa Tunari, a small town in the heart of the jungle, which offers an array of unique wildlife experiences.

Local Customs and Rules

Remember that in Bolivia, they drive on the right-hand side of the road. Speed limits vary but are often lower than in the UK. Mobile use while driving is illegal, and seatbelts must be worn at all times.

Climate and Seasonal Events

Cochabamba is referred to as the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its mild climate year-round. Seasonal events to look out for include the Carnival in February and the Festival of Urkupiña in August, both colourful, lively events that are guaranteed to make your stay more memorable.

Local Currency

The currency in Bolivia is the Boliviano. Cash is the preferred payment method in many places, although most hotels and some restaurants and shops accept credit cards.

Embrace your Bolivian adventure and take home incredible memories from the heart of South America. Happy travelling!
