The old town of Ciutadella is an absolute must-visit. The unique blend of French and Italian architectural styles in narrow streets lined with airy patios is a sight to behold. For more modern surroundings, check out the areas around Plaça dels Pins.
When all this exploring leaves you hungry, the Spanish dining schedule will be a novelty to you – lunch doesn’t typically start until 2 pm and dinner begins around 9 pm. You’ll also get to experience leisurely midday siestas, much relaxed from the regular British routine.
Find a public car park like the one near Passeig de Sant Nicolau for convenient parking. Remember, unlike the UK, in Spain we drive on the right.
Depending on your preferences, a smaller car like a hatchback might be suited for the narrow city streets or a comfortable SUV for those longer drives. Marvel at the panoramic sea views on the Me-1 road between Ciutadella and Maó.
Watch out for the speed limits which are usually lower than in the UK – 50km/hr in urban areas and up to 90km/hr on open roads. Also, bear in mind the zero-tolerance policy on drink-driving, which is stricter than the UK limit.
Spain uses the Euro (€) but credit cards are also widely accepted. The climate is Mediterranean with warm summers and mild winters, so pack your beach wear for summer, but don’t forget a sweater for the pleasantly cool evenings!
If your visit aligns with the third week of June, don’t miss out on the Sant Joan Festival, a unique cultural extravaganza complete with horses, traditional costumes and plenty of atmosphere.
So, whether you choose to meander through the charming old town, gaze at the serene beaches or try out authentic Spanish cuisine, Ciutadella de Menorca is sure to create a wealth of memorable experiences.
