Speed Limits and Traffic Rules

New Zealand's general speed limit is 100 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h in urban areas. Be aware that some residential areas may have a speed limit of 40 km/h. We strongly recommend respecting the rules, as Traffic Enforcement Cameras are quite common here.

Car Class Recommendations

New Zealand’s terrain can be quite diverse. For urban commuting, a small or medium car is more than adequate. However, if you are planning to head towards the South Island’s mountains or off the beaten track, an SUV or a four-wheel drive would be more appropriate.

Parking

Parking in Christchurch can be found both on-street or in car parks, some are free for a certain period but be sure to check the signage. Always park facing the direction of the traffic flow, contrary to what is commonly done in Britain.

Attractions in and around Christchurch

Aided with a rental car, Christchurch and its surroundings become an explorer’s dream. Here’s a little taster of the delights that await you:

  • Christchurch Botanic Gardens: Immerse in the vibrant greenery and colourful flowers. Don’t forget to enjoy a scenic punting ride on the Avon River that flows through it.
  • Akaroa: A charming town with a strong French influence, just a 90-minute drive from the city.
  • Hanmer Springs: Drive 90-minutes north and be ready for a lavish hot springs experience amidst the mountains.
  • Arthur’s Pass National Park: In just two hours drive west, you'll experience some of the South Island's most stunning alpine scenery.

Currency and Climate

The currency here is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). As for the weather, Christchurch enjoys a temperate, oceanic climate. It can get quite hot in the summer (Dec-Feb), with temperatures hitting 30°C. In winter (Jun-Aug), it usually remains above freezing, but do bring warm clothing if you're visiting during this period.

Seasonal Events

From sports events to food and wine festivals, Christchurch has something happening all year round. The SummerTimes festival from December to February is particularly popular, with a host of outdoor entertainment and fun-filled activities for the whole family.
