The Chinggis Khaan International Airport, located 18 kilometres from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, is the largest and busiest airport in Mongolia. It has a single terminal that is divided into both domestic and international areas. Despite being a relatively small airport, it often sees a decent influx of international visitors.
Being a country filled with vast landscapes and nomadic culture, Mongolia is perfect for road trips. There are car hire services available at the airport from trusted providers, offering a range of vehicles from compact cars to SUVs suitable for the terrain.
There are several petrol stations within a 20-minute drive from the airport making it easy for you to fuel up the rental car before embarking on your journey. Petrol is using sold by the litre, just like in the UK.
In Mongolia, contrary to the UK, cars are driven on the right-hand side of the road. Roads can be bumpy and in rural areas, they might even be non-existent. Hence, GPS navigation can be unreliable at times. Also, keep in mind that the country has strict drunk-driving laws.
Mongolia has plenty to offer - Ulaanbaatar city, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, the ancient Karakorum city and more. These destinations and many others are within a driving distance from the airport making Mongolia a compelling road trip destination.
Mongolia experiences extreme climates. Winters can be bitterly cold while summers can be very hot. If you're travelling between November and April, you may want to consider hiring a 4x4 vehicle to safely navigate possibly icy roads.
