Cephalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands, is famed for its dramatic landscapes, exotic beaches, and picturesque villages. Located on the western coast of Greece, the island boasts a unique blend of lush green landscapes, sparkling blue seas, and an array of diverse cultural experiences.
Getting around the island is best done by car, but remember, driving in Cephalonia (and Greece in general) involves a few differences compared to the UK.
Unlike the UK, Greek traffic rules dictate driving on the right-hand side of the road, and your hired car’s steering wheel will be on the left.
Speed limits vary, but in general, expect 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and a maximum of 130 km/h on the motorways.
When deciding on a car class, consider your travel plans. Compact cars are great for city driving while larger SUVs are perfect for exploring the island's rugged landscape. Always consider the number of passengers, luggage space, and fuel economy.
Cephalonia is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in Greece. Myrtos Beach, famous for its white sandy shores and mesmerising turquoise waters, is a must-visit.
Discover the fascinating Melissani Cave with its ethereal lake where sunlight creates a magical atmosphere inside the cave.
Climb or drive to the top of Mount Ainos, the island's highest peak, for a breath-taking panoramic view of Cephalonia.
The island enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. So, it's generally lovely and warm, a bit like an excellent British summer's day!
Note that Greece uses the Euro. Credit or debit cards are popular forms of payment in most places but having some cash in hand is always a good idea, especially in smaller establishments.
With all this in mind, prepare yourself for an unforgettable journey of discovery. Cephalonia, your Greek adventure is about to begin!
