Renting a car is your best option for comfortably exploring Castro and the rest of Chiloé. A point to note is that driving is on the right-hand side, unlike in the UK.
The best car class for the city would be compact or economy cars. Castro's roads are a bit narrow, similar to those you’d find in British rural towns. For longer trips along the coast and to the National Park, an SUV or a 4x4 is advisable due to unpaved roads.
Finding parking in Castro is relatively easy. Ensure you park in well-lit areas and avoid leaving valuables visible in the car.
Castro's most iconic neighbourhood is 'Gamboa', home to some of the city's most photogenic palafitos. Do not forget to explore 'Rilán', 'Nercón' and 'Llau-Llao' villages nearby. Each possesses unique charm. Speaking some Spanish could be helpful, as you might find fewer English speakers in these regions than in the UK.
Every February, the island celebrates the 'Semana Castroana', a festival showcasing the island’s tradition and culture. You won’t want to miss it!
From old-world charm to stunning natural expanses, Castro offers a truly unique holiday experience. It's definitely a journey that requires a keen sense of adventure and a love for exploration. So, take the leap, and we're sure you won't regret it!
