The town of Carnarvon may be located halfway around the world from Britain, but it boasts a unique British charm. Founded in 1883, Carnarvon was named after Henry Herbert, the 4th Earl of Carnarvon, a British statesman and father of the famous Egyptologist, Lord Carnarvon. The town is noted for its historic 'woolshed' which was designed by a Victorian engineer, making Carnarvon a nostalgic slice of Britain in Australia's western coastline.
Just like in the UK, Australians drive on the left side of the road. However, the roads can be wider and the distances between towns longer. Be prepared for these differences and take regular breaks if you're doing long drives.
Speed limits are strictly enforced in Australia. On most residential roads, the speed limit is 50 km/h, increasing to 100 km/h on major roads and highways. Watch out for speed limit signs, especially in school zones where lower limits apply during certain hours.
Parking in Carnarvon is usually free and ample, a delightful contrast to the often congested and costly parking in UK towns and cities. Paid parking areas can be found near the town centre. Remember, parking direction is parallel to the road and always in the same direction as the flow of traffic.
The Carnarvon region is home to natural and cultural attractions that are best explored by car. Don’t forget to check out the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, Fascine Boardwalk and beautiful Blowholes. Not to mention, the town is the gateway to the amazing Ningaloo Reef and the stunning landscapes of the Gascoyne region.
Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, Carnarvon is a perfect destination all year round. However, just as Britain has its rainy days, Carnarvon too can surprise you with a tropical thunderstorm, particularly from December to March. Always wear sunblock and keep a bottle of water in your car, especially during the hot summers.
With a rental car, the possibilities in Carnarvon are endless. Whether it's driving to the Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways, visiting surrounding cities, or just exploring the unique local neighbourhoods and beaches, car rental makes it easy and convenient to enjoy an authentic Australian adventure!
