Climate: Expect Sun and Snow
Unlike the grey skies often experienced in the UK, Calgary is known for its sunny weather. However, snow is not uncommon, even in summer months. Be sure to bring a variety of clothing options to suit the unpredictable weather.
Driving in Calgary
Visitors from abroad may find it a bit challenging to adapt to the driving rules in Canada. It’s important to plan ahead and get familiar with some of them.
Speed Limits
- The speed limits are usually 50 km/h in cities and 80-110 km/h on highways which is quite different from the UK’s 30 mph / 48.28 km/h city speed limit and 70 mph / 112.65 km/h motorway limit.
- Also note, unlike in the UK where distances are measured in miles, in Canada, they are measured in kilometers.
Traffic Rules
- Like in the UK, overtaking is allowed on any side. However, unlike the UK, pedestrians generally have right of way at crosswalks, including at intersections.
- Cars are driven on the right-hand side of the road in Canada, opposite to the left-hand driving in the UK. Be cautious at intersections and whilst turning.
Parking
Calgary has plenty of parking spaces throughout the city. However, most of them are paid. Free parking is available but tends to fill up quickly. It’s worth noting that in some areas parking is only permissible for a limited time.
Car Class Recommendations
As Calgary spreads out quite a bit, driving can be the best way to see everything the city has to offer. Here are a few car types we recommend considering:
- Economy cars: A small economical car is perfect for city driving and short distances.
- Fullsize cars: For families or larger groups, a full-size car or SUV might be better.
- All-wheel drive cars: For those wanting to explore the Rocky Mountains or other natural wonders nearby, an all-wheel drive car would be better suited.
Attractions and Routes
- Start your journey at the Stampede Park, the location of the world-famous Calgary Stampede.
- Head west through the city and take in the stunning views of the mountains at Canada Olympic Park, the location of the 1988 Winter Olympics.
- End your day with a trip up the Calgary Tower for a beautiful 360 view of the city.
Currency Conversion
One significant point to know is that the currency used in Canada is the Canadian Dollar (CAD), not the British Pound Sterling (GBP). It’s advisable to watch the exchange rates and plan your expense accordingly.
