Driving in Baku

Car Class Recommendations

A compact car is recommended for driving in Baku due to its narrow and busy city streets. If you plan on exploring the surrounding landscapes, an SUV might be a better choice.

Traffic Rules

Azerbaijan's traffic rules might be slightly different to what you're used to back home. Remember, the driving style in Baku can be aggressive with drivers often changing lanes without warning. Do ensure to drive defensively and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

  • The steering wheel is on the left side of the vehicle and motorists drive on the right side of the road, unlike the UK.
  • Seat belts must be worn at all times.
  • The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0%, meaning no drinking and driving at all.

Speed Limits

In general, the speed limit within the city of Baku is 60 km/h (37 mph), on country roads it's 90 km/h (56 mph), and on highways it's up to 110 km/h (68 mph).

Parking

Finding parking in the city centre can be a challenge, especially during peak hours. It is recommended to take advantage of your hotel's parking facilities or designated parking lots.

Exploring Baku

Baku is a city rich in history and culture with plenty to explore, from the UNESCO World Heritage site of the walled Old City to the stunning modern design of the Flame Towers.

Attractions

  • The impressive Heydar Aliyev Centre is one of the most famous buildings in Baku, a masterpiece of modern architecture.
  • Take a peaceful stroll through the picturesque Baku Boulevard which extends for 5 km along the Caspian Sea coast.
  • Visit Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring ancient rock carvings.

Surrounding Cities and Landscapes

If you're the exploring type, there are several picturesque towns and landscapes around Baku worth driving to, such as Gobustan, a town world-renowned for its mud volcanoes.

Seasonal Events

Baku has a rich calendar of cultural events. The Baku International Jazz Festival in October and the Novruz Festival in March are particularly worth checking out.

Currency

The local currency is the Manat (AZN). It's advisable to have some local currency on hand as not all places accept credit cards.

Climate

Baku has a semi-arid climate with hot and humid summers, cool and occasionally wet winters, and strong winds all year round. Make sure to check the weather forecast before your trip and pack accordingly!

Remember to plan your journey well and always stay safe on the road. Happy motoring and enjoy the beauty of Baku!
