Your journey Down Under begins at Ayers Rock Airport, a small yet well-equipped airport located near the heart of Australia's Northern Territory. Despite its remote location, you'll be surprised at the range of amenities available. From friendly staff at the car rental stations right inside the terminal to a cosy cafe offering refreshments and snacks, your arrival will be as smooth as possible.
Ready for road tripping? The unique terrain of the Northern Territory presents a different driving experience to those accustomed to Britain’s motorways. Expect vast landscapes, unrestricted roads, and a surprising abundance of wildlife. But don’t worry, the roads, especially route Lasseter Highway that connects the airport to the iconic Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, are well maintained.
As soon as you step off the plane, a wide range of rental cars are ready for you to choose from. Whether you're looking for a compact car or a 4WD, there's something to fit your comfort and budget needs. Remember to request for the car to be equipped with air conditioning - the Australian sun can be relentless!
Unlike the UK, petrol stations ("servos", as the locals call them) can be few and far between in the Outback. The closest petrol station from the airport is about 20 km away in Yulara. Make sure you fill up your tank before you hit the road!
While you may be thousands of miles from home, the friendly atmosphere of Australia's Northern Territory will make you feel right at home. English is the common language, so you'll have no trouble navigating. Remember to exchange your Pounds to Australian Dollars, and familiarise yourself with the colourful notes and unique coins.
Australia's Northern Territory is known for its harsh desert climate, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 30°C. Apply plenty of sunscreen, wear a hat and carry a good amount of water wherever you go. Just like at home, remember to drive on the left-hand side!
Just a short drive from the airport lies an array of breathtaking sights. The world-renowned Uluru (Ayers Rock) is a must-see, and Kata Tjuta is equally as impressive. As the sun sets over the horizon, you'll witness a colourful spectacle unlike any you’ve seen back in Britain.
We wish you a memorable trip exploring Australia's Northern Territory!
