Driving in Atlantic City is mostly a breeze. Though there are a few differences between the UK and US driving rules that you should note. For instance, unlike in the UK, you have to drive on the right-hand side of the road in Atlantic City. The driver's seat and the controls are on the vehicle's left side, and you have to use your left hand to change gears if your car is manual.
Atlantic City streets can cater to all types of vehicles. But considering the city's atmosphere and traffic conditions, a compact car might be your best option for most of your city commuting. It offers better fuel economy and is easier to park. However, if you plan to venture into Atlantic City's outskirts or participate in outdoor activities, an SUV might be a better choice.
Atlantic City has a well-organized street grid, making it easy to navigate through the city by car. There are plenty of parking lots and metered on-street parking available. However, during peak times, street parking can be a bit challenging, so plan your parking spots in advance!
With your rental car, you'll be able to visit attractions spread across the city like the renowned Boardwalk, Absecon Lighthouse, and the Atlantic City Aquarium. Take the famous Atlantic City Expressway for an easy drive into the city, or the scenic Ocean Drive to enjoy the coastal views.
Remember that traffic laws and speed limits can differ from those in the UK. In Atlantic City, the standard speed limit in urban areas is 25 mph (40 km/h), unless posted otherwise. Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers, and it's requisite to stop for school buses when red lights are flashing.
The downtown area of Atlantic City is well worth exploring, with a rich array of shopping, dining options, and historic sites. After parking your rental car, take a leisurely stroll along the Boardwalk to visit various entertainment piers and numerous beaches such as Brigantine Beach, Margate City Beach and Longport Dog Beach.
Atlantic City has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and warm, humid summers. So depending on the time of your visit, make sure to pack your outfits accordingly.
We wish you a fabulous Atlantic City adventure!
