Antonio José de Sucre Airport, known locally as Cumana Airport, is located in the city of Cumana in Sucre State, Venezuela. Although it is not one of the largest airports in Venezuela, it is a significant hub offering domestic flights. There is currently no direct flight from the UK to Cumana Airport, meaning you will likely need to transit through Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.
Your Venezuelan exploration is set to begin as soon as you step off the plane. Car rental service desks are located in the airport where you can choose from a selection of vehicles depending on your needs.
For the times you'll need to refuel, there are several petrol stations conveniently located near the airport, which operate from dawn till dusk. Do take note to fill up before your excursions as petrol stations are relatively sparse in the rural areas of Venezuela.
Cumana, the closest city to the airport, boasts a rich historical heritage — a paradise waiting to be explored. Its beautiful beaches and warm climate make it perfect for a post-flight recovery.
Venezuela experiences a tropical climate, considerably warmer than the UK. Lightweight clothing is recommended for your trip. Do prepare adequately for the heat especially if you're planning to drive around throughout the day.
The official currency is the Venezuelan bolívar. ATMs are available throughout the city, but they may not accept foreign cards. It would be wise to bring enough cash for your initial days. Credit cards are an accepted form of payment at larger establishments, though it might be a good idea to keep some cash on hand for smaller, local vendors.
Healthcare and safety standards may vary from those in the UK. Local tap water is not advised for drinking. Bottled water can be readily purchased at supermarkets and kiosks. As for safety, common sense and vigilance would come in handy.
We hope this guide will serve you well during your Venezuelan journey. Enjoy your adventure!
