Most roads around Zanzibar are well maintained, making a simple sedan or hatchback a practical choice. For excursions into more rural areas or nature reserves, a 4x4 vehicle would be a better option.
You won’t struggle to refuel after your travels. Several petrol stations are available near the airport, providing round-the-clock service.
The airport is strategically situated just south of Stone Town, making most routes easily accessible. The drive to Stone Town takes approximately 10 minutes, while drives to popular areas such as Bwejuu and Jambiani take around an hour.
The currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling, however, US dollars are widely accepted (especially for larger purchases). It's worth noting that unlike in the UK, credit cards are not accepted everywhere, so it's a good idea to carry some cash.
Zanzibar boasts a tropical climate, so make sure to pack appropriately. The British waterproofs can stay at home!
Just like in the UK, Tanzanians also drive on the left, which is a relief to most Brits abroad. Also, English is well understood in Zanzibar, which will make your journey even more comfortable.
