Þórshöfn Airport is a small regional airport located in the northeastern part of Iceland. It's the gateway to the remote landscapes of the Langanes peninsula, a haven for nature lovers with its bird cliffs, wide expanses, and towering mountains. It offers a unique experience quite different from the bustle of larger UK airports.
No car rental stations are available directly at the airport, so we recommend pre-booking. Major car rental providers like Hertz, Europcar, and Budget can deliver the car to the airport on request.
Remember, in contrast to the UK, Icelanders drive on the right side of the road! This might take a little getting used to at first, but don't worry, most people adjust quickly.
Speed limits might also vary between the UK and Iceland. In urban areas, it's normally 50 km/h, but on rural roads, limits may range between 80 and 90 km/h. Be sure to follow the signs!
Due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, the weather in Þórshöfn can be unpredictable. Prepare for rapidly changing conditions and colder temperatures than in the UK, even in summer. Don't forget a warm, waterproof jacket!
Þórshöfn is a perfect spot to start exploring the Langanes Peninsula. Head to the nearby Skoruvíkurbjarg cliffs, where you can witness millions of local bird species. Also, the Fontur Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula offers some spectacular views!
Don't hesitate to fill up your tank at Þórshöfn or Raufarhöfn, the last towns with gas stations before you embark on the scenic drives around Langanes.
As Iceland's currency is the Icelandic króna, consider exchanging some pounds before arrival for incidentals, although credit cards are accepted widely.
Driving in a different country might seem daunting, but with the right information at hand, it becomes an exciting part of the adventure! Enjoy your unforgettable journey across the stunning landscapes of Iceland.
